Bandanna/Handkerchief Shell Print

The local shop had some cloth with a Japanese wave pattern. I thought I’d try making some bandanna/handkerchiefs out of it.

For my first attempt I tried to hand stitch a rolled hem. It was fun, but it was more work than I expected.

I hemmed the second one on the machine.

Ototo おっとっと

In Geology we studied the use of microfossils to date the layers in deep sea sediments. This is commonly used in petroleum and gas exploration.

Morinaga make a snack called Ototo おっとっと which is pretty much the edible version of microfossils.

They’re quite addictive. I think they would make the perfect beer snack.

Farewell Quilt

I recently left my job after six years. As a gift the staff gave me a stack of denim swatches with goodbye messages written on them. I joked that I was going to sew them into a big diaper for my daughter to wear.

Well, I didn’t make a diaper, but I’ve put them together into some sort of quilt, but I’m not sure what to do with it.

Raw Shell Cordovan Coin Pouch

Today I made a shell cordovan coin pouch. I’ve had these cordovan shells for a while, and I always liked the texture of the unfinished side, so I thought I’d try making the coin pouch inside out. The reverse side of the shell has a slightly nubuck feel.

The cordovan really is nice to work with. It’s supple and easy to cut, yet somehow has strength.

The biggest problem I have is that my hardware isn’t quite what I was after. The coin conch and the snap buttons take up a lot of vertical space.

Changes afoot

I’m changing jobs, and as part of that I’m moving Indigofan’s site hosting.

As you can see I’m messing with the templates – things are a bit broken. Check back in a few days.

Eco Index for Apparel

The Wall Street Journal has an article on a system being developed to rate clothing on their environmental impact.

In the interactive for a pair of 501 jeans there are some statistics given…

I’m sure that my water usage over the life of a pair of jeans is MUCH less that what used for these claims.
